David Gortler, PharmD, FCCP
Associate Professor of Pharmacology
Department of Pharmacology

The obesity epidemic imposes an enormous public health burden and has become one of the greatest public health challenges in the United States. Achieving weight loss is often challenging for patients and requires significant support from all points of contact within the healthcare system. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to play a substantial role in the management of obesity with a focus on counseling, lifestyle change, and pharmacotherapy. This activity will explore the pathophysiology of obesity along with current and emerging pharmacologic therapy in the management of obesity. It will also assist the pharmacist in formulating counseling strategies incorporating lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic treatment for overweight and obese patients.
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
Describe epidemiology and medical consequences relating to obesity
Explore pathophysiology of obesity, including the role of adiposity in obesity-associated metabolic disease

Formulate counseling strategies incorporating lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic treatment for overweight and obese patients

The information in this presentation is intended for educational use and to stimulate professional discussion among colleagues. It should not be construed as legal advice. There is no way such a brief discussion of an issue or topic for educational or discussion purposes can adequately and fully address the multifaceted and often complex issues that arise in the course of professional practice. Moreover, statutes, regulations, and court interpretations of the law can vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. It is always the best advice for a pharmacist to seek counsel from an attorney who can become thoroughly familiar with the intricacies of a specific situation and render advice in accordance with the full information.
