Moving Ahead: Examining Current Treatment Challenges and New Advances in Parkinson’s Disease

Activity Overview
Tremendous advances have been made in our understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, and genetics of Parkinson’s disease (PD). In turn, major breakthroughs have occurred in the development of highly effective therapeutic strategies for PD. This activity offers a review of epidemiology and pathophysiology of PD, as well as management of early-stage and advanced stage PD. The discussion will center on current and emerging pharmacologic therapy and therapeutic challenges, exploring dose titration strategies and management of treatment-related adverse effects. The pharmacist’s role in optimizing treatment benefits and enforcing treatment adherence in PD will also be addressed.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
Describe epidemiology and pathophysiology of PD
Evaluate management of early-stage and advanced stage PD
Discuss current and emerging pharmacologic therapy and explore therapeutic challenges
Examine dose titration strategies and management of treatment-related adverse effects
Explore the pharmacist’s role in optimizing treatment benefits and enforcing treatment adherence
