Activity Overview
The obesity epidemic imposes an enormous public health burden and has become one of the greatest public health challenges in the United States. Achieving weight loss is often challenging for patients and requires significant support from all points of contact within the healthcare system. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to play a substantial role in the management of obesity with a focus on counseling, lifestyle change, and pharmacotherapy. This activity will explore the pathophysiology of obesity along with current and emerging pharmacologic therapy in the management of obesity. It will also assist the pharmacist in formulating counseling strategies incorporating lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic treatment for overweight and obese patients.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
Describe epidemiology and medical consequences relating to obesity
Explore pathophysiology of obesity, including the role of adiposity in obesity-associated metabolic disease
Explore current and emerging pharmacologic therapy in the management of obesity
Formulate counseling strategies incorporating lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic treatment for overweight and obese patients
Pharmacy Times Office of Continuing Professional Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
